small houses

In her comment the other day, Kellie said she wondered why there is such need for space these days - as in, people choosing bigger houses over smaller ones. Then, Homedaisy asked us to show her our words.

Well, these words aren't mine, but I thought of both of you gals when I saw them.

This sign hangs on a small house that is a few blocks away from me. Across the street from the house there is construction on a new house, the old home that was there was torn down. When I saw the sign, I knew it wasn't a coincidence that the owners of it had decided to hang it so prominently by their front entrance. It is as if they are trying to tell the world that they don't like big houses, either.

What a beautiful sign and heartfelt sentiment. Thank you for sharing it and for thinking of me when you saw it!

I really like that sign. My sweet hubby and I love to talk and dream about our dream home but it never includes tons of square footage. We love cozy. Plus, I dont want to clean a huge house!

Well, my little 4 room cottage will always be too small to hold my friends and family, it needs work, but its cozy and perfect! I love that sign!

I'll remember that the next time we run out of places to sit when friends are over! :)

I grew up in I guess what you'd call a medium sized house (4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms) for 3 people. When I go back there now it seems so small I can't imagine there was any room but somehow you make do with what you've got. I've also lived in a very small studio apt. and a small 1 BR in NYC. Now I live in a big place for just one person (and a dog)but it's a lot of wasted space. I don't own it but it's rent-free so I am not complaining! I would love my own little cottage...maybe someday. A girl can dream :-)

I love that sign! I don't get the whole big house thing either. I would feel lost in a big house. Bigger is not better in my mind (or heart).

I love the sign and would LOVE a smaller home. Our house is 1600 sq ft. There are three of us and we have MORE than enough room.

The neighborhood tour you gave us last week reminded me very much of the neighborhood in which I grew up. There has been so much construction around my childhood home- three new houses in about a year and a half! My parents still live there, in the same perfect little white cape with gray shutters. And they would love that sign.

I am a real estate agent in a beach town and it is sad to see the old cottages being torn down and replaced by "McMansions."

There was a time when I longed for a McMansion; now I just want small and cozy.

Thanks for your great blog.

I think smaller homes feel a lot more cozier. So I 2nd the sentiment of the heartfelt sign.

I agree with this tread. I don't understand the need for so much space. So many of the houses have so much wasted space. Experts have even said it not healthy for family realationships, becaue they can isolate themselves from one another. In addition to the large homes you have to consider how technology has affected family life. Everything is so instant and now. Kids and parents are always ont the phone and internet. (Yikes as I type this and my husband is upstairs.) I do limit my time...
Now I'm not saying there aren't times when I would like a slighly bigger home for decorating and design but there is a reasonable amount of space. Love the sign on the house. Very cute.

I think I want a sign like that! We downsized quite considerably about 3 years ago and, though at times, I still miss the space...I still know we have more space than we truly need.
