legwear advice needed

Remember Brig? Her wedding is Saturday, and we can't wait. This is the dress that I'm wearing. I found it a few weeks ago and was so pleased to snatch it up for a mere $69. I mean, come on! $69!

But, I've got a question for you.

Earlier today I was watching Oprah's show about shlumpadinkas. Did you see it? Did you see Lloyd Boston's fashion tips & advice at the end (and how about those no-iron shirts from Brooks Brothers)? Ok, did you hear what he said about hoisery...you don't need it except for conservative office environments, it's better to use some bronzing cream and/or glimmer-shimmer on the legs and go bare for an evening event.

So my question is...bare? Really?

It's about 100 degrees below zero in Chicago this week, and I am of Irish descent. I'm going to need an entire bottle of glimmer-shimmer-brozing-magic for these pale legs. What do you think?

Advice, ladies. Advice!

(also, what is glimmer-shimmer-bronzer? Is that just another way of saying self-tanner?

Help!

I just found out that the spray on tans are pretty reasonable, what about looking into that?

It is cold here too, so I am with you on the coldness, but the thing is, once you are inside, you are good to go!

LOVE the dress!

don't know about the glimmer-shimmer.

Are you wearing a black wrap (pashmina?) If you are, you can wear black tights, with black heels of course. Tights are really in-style right now.

Meg, I wish I had some advice for you, but I am ridiculously unfashionsavylike. The leg stuff scares me so bad I hardly ever wear skirts or dresses in the winter.

In the summer I wear bare legs and never shave. Quite a contradictory person I am.LOL.
anyhow, i did want to stop by and say that the dress is TDF and no one will even see your legs (unless of course you have also bought some TDF shoes that will rival the dress).

I saw that too! I think that bronzer is a self tanner but they have the shimmer lotion (I think Jergens makes one)which would be fun (on your shoulders, too).I think you should definitely go with bare legs. It's a beautiful dress & hosiery wouldn't do it justice (my opinion).

Have fun!!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that no legwear in the middle of winter in Chicago--despite fashion trends--is gonna look just a little bit strange. Even indoors. I'd opt for a sheer hose, even in a natural or nude shade instead of black (though black would also look good). But naked? Jeez, you'll get frostbite.

Love the dress.

hi Meg,

My sister, who is up on fashion, says NO HOSE! And she lives in Pennsylvania. I think the color of the bronzy tanning would be prettier than hose colors, plus hosiery is not warm. Also, the smoothness of your legs is better than the texture of the hose!!

I live in Chicagoland too and I would go with a pair of sheer black hose. I would then wear a pair of black pumps. It makes the leg look long and lean.
Heck I wore brown tights from Talbots today and a pair of Donal Pliner shoes that are brown so it looks continuous.

You know, I am from Southern, Ontario Canada which probably has similar weather to Chicago. I think that it would be odd to not wear hose in the middle of winter to everyone who didn't watch that Oprah show.

I know that no-hose thing is a big deal now, but frankly, I'm always freezing. And I'm not a celebrity so I think I could get away with it.
I highly doubt the What Not To Wear scary twosome will run up to you and start screaming at you for a hose faux pas, so I can safely say: If you want the hose, wear the hose. But not with open toe sandals.
Have fun!

I have no advice since I am of native American decent (I can't remember the last time I wore hose)....but the dress is adorable and such a bargain!

Jergens does make a nice shimmer lotion and it evens out your skin tone - I use it often in the summer being fair myself.

I agree with the no nude hose issue BUT you can find the sheerest of sheer nylons that are nearly invisible if you have a real issue with the no hose suggestion. And Chicago in Feb I would too!

When I say sheer I mean SHEER - they are not stretchy in any way, they will not last more than one night and will cost you a small fortune but they will have the same effect as no nylons at all. People will touch your leg wondering if they are bare.

I hear what people are saying about the tights but for me it makes the dress more casual.

Let us know what you decide!!

I'm a Chicago girl myself, and I would go bare legged...I mean, that thin layer of lycra isn't really going to add much warmth and I think the bare leg looks so much prettier. If you must do something, do opaque black tights though.

You need hose, for goodness sakes, in winter! Go for nude or barely black which gives just a hint of black. Remember, it was a MAN giving that advice. He was in his nice warm suit.

Ohh, that's a pretty dress! I think you can do a really high quality nude sheer or sheer black and be good.

I simply cannot not do hose. My legs are too scarred up. And bronzer? Yeah right. My legs are so pale that one would be able to tell right off that it was bronzer. I just can't go without hose when wearing a skirt or dress that is dress-up. Just can't do it. Doesn't look right on me.

WOW! I think it would look funny to show up with bronzy-tanned legs in the winter in Chicago! But then...I'm no fashion maven. I think the sheer black hose with black pumps would be so classy and chic!

We're here with you, Meg! All the way! Oh, by the way..I went back to my 'old' blog...so come by for a visit and some lemonade! hehe!

oh girl...i watched it with you...i totally agreed with everything on the show, EXCEPT i am guilty of the velour track suit...though i do wear my leopard flats with them (ha!)...but i mean, what? am i going to get all frou-froued up to take my daughter to school to turn right around and start doing laundry and cleaning up a pee-pee bathroom?? i wouldn't wear one to a class party or something though...okay...ANYWAY...i think a very sheer black pair of hose and high, high heels would look so pretty...and a beautiful necklace. at least you're not like me...i'm ALLERGIC to all self-tanning products. tried 'em ALL!! so if you find some kind of shimmer, bronzer lotion potion minus the self-tanner, PLEASE let me know! blessings!

Hi There,
I just popped over from BJ's blog.
I just wanted to say that your dress is beautiful and wear on your legs what ever makes you comfortable...would you be more comfortable wearing hose? if without you would feel conscious it could spoil your fun.

Hello. Advice from down-under... I never wear "hose" (or call it that)... I can't imagine being in temps that cold. Mmmm. I'd probably go sheer or bare.
Go the fake tan!!! (call it what you will, that is what it is). It is a gir's best friend... at least it id in a warmer climate.
Like the dress though.

The Wall Street Journal just addressed this YESTERDAY. They said that (and I'm pretty much quoting) although "certain fashionistas" think hose is out of date, it's certainly very much *in, especially in colder climes. So... go for it! Just no reinforced toes, lol! (I never wear see-through hose anymore, and I keep L'oreal in business buying bronzer for my legs.) I'm more curious about your decision to wear something sleeveless (virtually TOPless, well, above the chest) in Chicago in winter...

I love a bare leg...but it is sooo cold! I just wore black opaque tights to a holiday party with patent shoes and a patent bag to dress things up!
Good luck, have fun and stay warm!

Wear what keeps you warm, I'm sure you will look great whatever you choose. BTW gave you a little shout on my blog :0)

I wear hosiery, leggings, tights or something in the winter. I DID see the show. You know how I love Oprah! I think the bare legs recommendation is primarily for the summer. And, I think he was speaking against those hideous nude hose. For whatever it is worth, I think you will be fine in any thing black. I love the dress. You will look MARVElOUS!

I know I am too late, and you have already been to the wedding. I still vote for bare legs with tanning shimmer/glimmer. Especially with a dress like that one.
Hope whatever you did worked out.

I'm new to your blog (love it by the way) but feel like I should throw in my two cents. If it makes in difference, my degree is in fashion and I worked in the fashion world for over 10 years. Best advice I can give...RULES SCHMULES! Yes, you don't want to be the latest fashion victim, however if YOU aren't comfortable w/out hose (not to mention if you will freeze your bumb off) then wear them.

I think it was d'rae that said black tights are in style, so go with some opaque black tights and some chunky black stacked heels. That would be extremely fashionable.

Go for what works best for your life! You'll be a smash.

Here in California the girls never wear hose anymore. I still prefer to wear something on my legs unless it's the dead of summer and I'm tan enough so in the winter, I go with tights or tall boots. Tights are very in so that's what I'd do :) Love the dress!

Hugs,
Dena

What a great find! You must have looked gorgeous! What did you end up deciding re the legs? Personally, I have yet to find a fake tanner/bronzer without an offensive smell.
